LE MARS, Iowa - Carl Gustave Schelin, 88, of Le Mars died Sunday, June 29, 1997, at his residence.

Servicves will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. John's Lutheran Church E.L.C.A. in Le Mars, with the Rev. David Kramer officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Tuesday, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars.

Mr. Schelin was born Aug. 15, 1908, in Nelson, Minn., the son of Charles and Anna (Sherlin) Schelin. He was raised in Nelson and attended school there, graduating from Alexandria High School in Alexandria, Minn. He was employed with Herbergers Department Store in St. Cloud, Minn., and later moved to Muscatine, Iowa and managed a Herbergers Department Store.

He married Mary Eleanor Howe on March 7, 1932, in Muscatine. The couple moved to Le Mars in 1937, and purchased the Model Cleaners, which he operated until retiring in 1975. Following retirement, the couple traveled, attending several Air Stream Conventions. She died Nov. 20, 1985. He married Marian Ording on June 23, 1990, in Alexandria.

He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, were he served as president of the congregation, the organ committee, and several other committees. He was a 51 year member of the Le Mars Lions Club and received the Warren Coleman Award. He was a member of the Wally Byam Caravan. He had been active in the Boy Scouts for over 30 years, and was recognized with the Silver Beaver Award. He had served on the Plymouth County Fair Board for several years and was a treasurer. He was a member of the Le Mars Chamber of Commerce from 1942 to 1975, serving three terms as president and received the Le Mars Citizen of the Year Award. He was a past member of the Giblem Blue Lodge. He enjoyed gardening, wood working and fishing.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter and her husband, Judy and Gary Schindel; a son and his wife, Jim and Donna of Adel, Iowa; two stepchildren and their spouses, Jon and Marie Clare Ording of Boston, Mass., and Suzanne and Ron Wilson of Chandler, Ariz.; five grandchildren, Brad, Bruce, and Bryan Schindel, Jay Schelin, and Kim Wigg; seven step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
