Lloyd Buss, 91, of Paullina, Iowa passed away Friday, October 21, 2011 at Baum Harmon Mercy Hospital in Primghar, Iowa.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, October 24, 2011 at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars. Reverend John Battern will officiate. Burial will follow in Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation with the family present will be from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Sunday, October 23, 2011 at the funeral home. Visitation will resume 1 hour prior to the service on Monday at the funeral home.
Lloyd William Buss was born on the Buss farm in Elgin Township, in rural Plymouth County, Iowa on November 3, 1919, to William and Bertha (Moir) Buss. After the death of his mother, his family later moved to Fairfield, CA for several years. He returned to Maurice, IA and lived with Merritt and Eva (Buss) Hawkins until he graduated from Maurice High School in 1938. Following high school graduation, he attended Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, CA for two years studying agriculture and engineering until he joined the Navy in October of 1941 serving during World War II on the USS Platte in the South Pacific.
Following his honorable discharge from the Navy, he returned to Iowa and was united in marriage with Georgine Osborne in the Seney Methodist Church on February 14, 1947. He farmed for a short time near Craig, IA and in 1951; he moved his family to a farm south of Paullina, IA. He took a hiatus from farming and moved to California for five years working for the State Division of Highways. In 1965, he returned to his farm near Paullina and resumed his true love of farming. He enjoyed raising and experimenting with different varieties of muskmelon and watermelon and sharing with his friends and neighbors. Following retirement, he and Jeannie spent their winters in Texas. He loved music and picked up the art of playing a musical saw. He enjoyed playing his saw with friends and other musicians at local churches, nursing homes and music festivals.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Georgine and three children, Denise (Tom) Coombs of Linn Creek, MO; Bill Buss of Paullina, IA; and Kathy (Mike) Glouser of Cherokee, IA; four grandchildren: Chris (Becky) Coombs of Warrensburg, MO; Stacie (Sam) Smith of Iowa City, IA; Jeremy Glouser of Des Moines, IA; and Billy Glouser of Cherokee, IA; and four great grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers, Frank (Faye) Buss of Vacaville, CA; Ralph (Joyce) Buss of Fairfield, CA; his in laws Minderd and Lois Mars of Primghar, IA and Bill and Betty Osborne of Montevideo, MN; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Bertha (Moir) Buss and one brother Harold Buss and wife Lavonne.
