Jeanne Varenhorst, 67, of Le Mars, died Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2014, at Unity Point Health-St. Luke's Hospital in Sioux City.

Jeanne Ann Plueger was born Feb. 12, 1947, in Akron, the daughter of Darrell and Darlene (Cassens) Plueger. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John Evangelical Lutheran, Preston Township, rural Akron.

Jeanne graduated from Akron High School in 1965. Following graduation she worked at 1st National Bank in Akron.

Jeanne was united in marriage to Dean Varenhorst Sept. 15, 1966, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Preston Township. To this union, they were blessed with two children: Michelle in 1968 and Mark in 1972.

They farmed in Washington Township and lived on the farm until moving to Le Mars in 1997.

Jeanne was active in many community and church activities, including 4-H, Sunday and Bible School teacher, and the ladies group. She was a member of the Plymouth County 4-H Youth Committee, and the Plymouth County Fair Board. She had also worked at Mercy Medical Center and St. Luke's Regional Health Center, in Sioux City. She had been a member of the Merrill ambulance squad for 15 years, serving as an EMT and also director.

She had also served with the Plymouth County Disaster Services, a volunteer with Hospice of Siouxland, and served on the Plymouth County Hospice Advisory Board.

Jeanne loved to cook, bake, go motorcycling, play cards and play slot machines. Most of all, Jeanne loved her family and grandson.

Survivors include her husband of 48 years, Dean, of Le Mars; a daughter, Shelly Lawrence and her husband Stacy, of Sioux City, and a son Mark Varenhorst and grandson Dominic, and his wife Trish and her children Cameron, Riley, Avery and Logan, all of Merrill; three brothers: Ron Plueger, of Sergeant Bluff, Randy Plueger, of Hinton, and David Plueger and his wife Kim, of Le Mars; two sisters: Bev Wendel and her husband Walt, of Sergeant Bluff and Deb Boetger and her husband of Doug, of Lawton; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Darrell and Darlene (Cassens) Plueger; an infant twin brother at birth; her paternal grandparents, Henry and Alma Plueger; maternal grandparents, Henry and Flora Cassens; and her parents-in-law, Fritz and Katherine Varenhorst.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. John's Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A., in Le Mars, with the Rev. Dr. Jean Ziettlow and the Rev. Peter Rosenkvist officiating. Interment will follow at Memorial Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be after 4 p.m. Friday at the Carlsen Funeral Home followed by a 7 p.m. prayer service.
