William Schmidt found dean on home rooftop

William Schmidt, 74, retired tavern operator and farmer, was dead on arrival at Floyd Valley hospital late Wednesday afternoon (May 26,1976) after he collapsed and died on the roof of his home at 126 2nd Ave. NW. Le Mars police were called at 5:05 p.m. after two women next door saw Mr. Schmidt's body on the roof. Notifying authorities was JoAnn Harms who was visiting her sister-in-law Mrs. Arnold (Pat) Harms, 120 2nd Ave. NW, next door south of the Schmidt residence. Le Mars ambulance was dispatched to the scene. Ambulance personnel found Mr. Schmidt dead on the edge of the roof near the kitchen back door on the east side of the house. It was reported Mr. Schmidt had been, working with tar on the roof.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p,m. Saturday at St. John's American Lutheran church, with Rev, Arnold Imbrock officiating. Burial will be in Le Mars Memorial cemetery under direction of the Mauer funeral home.

Mr. Schmidt was a lifelong Plymouth county resident and had resided in Le Mars the last 28 years. He was born Feb. 16. 1902, in Portland township, son of John and Mathilda Wurl Schmidt.

His marriage to Pearl Frerichs took place Sept. 1, 1926, at a rural Akron farm home.

Surviving are his wife; two sons, LuVois and Marlowe, both of Le Mars; two daughters, Mrs. Marvin (Joyce) Langel, Le Mars, and Mrs. John (LaDonna) Paulas, Derby, Kan.; 17 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers, John of Hawarden and Elmer of Akron; three sisters, Mrs. Hilda Andresen Mrs. Tillie Erks and Mrs. Ella Frerichs, all of Akron, and a half sister Hannah Wuebben in Illinois. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and a half-sister.
