Funeral Of LaWayne Popken Last Week Killed In Accident
Funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon for LaWayne Popken, who died September 21 from injuries in an automobile accident which occurred early that morning at James, five miles north of Sioux City. Death was attributed to both internal injuries and frontal skull fracture. Mr. Popken, one of four passengers who were riding in a car driven by Heinz Renken, 24, of Ireton, was killed. Renken's injuries require d 100 stitches from cuts and bruises. Miss Marion Johnson, 17, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Johnson, suffered a back injury and Donald Anderson, 20, in the navy and home on leave at Hawarden, suffered cuts and bruises. All were patients in St. Vincent's hospital, Sioux City, and are still there at present writing. Cause of the accident was failure to make the curve, the car striking a culvert. The car was demolished.
Mr. Popken was the son of Otto Popken and Emma Marienau Popken of Craig, born at Akron, Iowa, January 19, 1923, so was 24 years at time of death. He Was a graduate of the Ireton high school with the class of 1941. He operated the Popken filling station in Craig. Funeral services were held from St. John's Lutheran church in Craig with burial in the cemetery there. Rev. Walter Schmidt officiated. Pall-bearers were the deceased cousins, Ervin Ommen, Varrel Popken, Ray Rohlfs, Larry Rohlfs, Norman Rohlfs and Elmer Rohlfs.
Survivors are his parents, two sisters, Mrs. Kenyon Karr of Ireton, Sandra Popken of Craig, an d two brothers, Darrel and Kenneth Popken of Craig.
Attending the service included Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Karr, Mrs. W. S. Johnston and Mr. and Mrs. Kenyon Karr. Mr. and Mrs. Weston Karr of LeMars also attended.
