Lorna Whiting, 85, of Akron, Iowa passed away Monday, January 14, 2013 at her daughter’s home in Sioux City, Iowa.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 19, 2013 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Akron. Pastor Steve Jewett from New Horizons United Church of Christ in Akron will officiate. Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday at Memorial Park Cemetery in Sioux City. Visitation will be after 3:00 p.m. Friday, January 18, 2013 with the family present after 6:00 p.m., and a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m., all at Carlsen Funeral Home – Schroeder Chapel in Akron.
Lorna Jean Taylor was born February 11, 1927, in Sioux City, Iowa, the daughter of Charles and Hazel (Mulheron) Taylor. She attended school in Westfield and graduated from Westfield High School.
She was united in marriage to Harold Whiting, Jr. on January 30, 1946, in Sioux City. The couple farmed near Westfield and Akron for many years. Lorna worked for the Westfield school as a cook and drove school bus for many years. She continued to drive the bus when Westfield and Akron merged together. In 1995, they retired and moved to Akron. Harold passed away April 27, 2000. Lorna continued to make her home in Akron.
Lorna was a charter and active member of New Horizons United Church of Christ in Akron. She and Harold enjoyed traveling throughout the western United States for many years. Lorna also enjoyed walking and bowling. But most of all, she loved the times spent with friends and family. She will be greatly missed.
Survivors include her daughter: Deb (Lonnie) Schuchard of Sioux City; two grandchildren: Brandon (Stacey) Schuchard of Arnold, MD and their children, Rylee and Kinzley, and Melanie (Marcus) Schmidt of Ankeny, Iowa and their children, Davis and Dixon; her brother: Robert Taylor of Westfield, IA; many special nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews; her dear friend: Ava Sargent of Akron, IA; and her special kids: David Feauto, Roxanne and Valley Weaver, Renee Feauto and Joe Hannam, Dale Feauto, Mary and Kurt Huisman
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harold; her son: Robert “Bobby” Whiting; sisters in law: Gwana Taylor, Violet Madden, and Florence Husmann; brothers in law: Clifford Madden and Alfred Husmann; and faithful dog: “Kipper”.
