Farmer Killed While Shooting Pigeons in Barn

Marvin Rounds, 54, who lived on a farm two miles south of Chatsworth on the South Dakota side, was killed Wednesday, March 31, while shooting pigeons in the barn with a .22 rifle.

He was alone at the time, so it is not known exactly what happened, but he apparently had been standng on a ladder to get a better view of the pigeons, when one of the rungs broke, causing him to fall and drop the rifle. The gun was discharged and the bullet entered his forhead, causing almost instantaneous death.

The body was discovered by his wife when she became alarmed because her husband did not come in for dinner. When she went to the barn to investigate sher immediately summoned aid but Mr. rounds apparently died shortly after the accident.

Sheriff Swen J. Bjork and Coroner Linden Anderson of Alk Point were called to the scene of the accident. The coroner's verdict was accidental death by shooting.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at Trinity Lutheran Church at Akron with Rev. Luther A. Meyer officiating. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery at Akron.

A son of Mr. and Mrs. William Rounds of Chatsworth, he was born January 24, 1900, at Blencoe, Iowa. he went to the Chatsworth vicinity as a small boy and spent the rest of his life in that community. Twenty-seven years ago he married Miss Mina schidt, who grew up in the same vicinity. To this union were born two children.

Besides the widow, he is survived by two sons, Dallas of Chamberlain, S. D., and Robert at home; his aged parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Rounds of Chatsworth; and four brothers and one sister, Floyd of Lawndale, Calif., Bill of Los Angeles, Calif., Howard of Hartley, Iowa, and Raymond and Mrs. Lucille Burnight of Chatsworth.
