Car truck meet on bridge: Herman Halweg, son killed

Funeral services for Herman Halweg, 63, route 1, Dundee, Minn., and his son, Vernon, 24, of Sioux City, will be held Wednesday here.

Both men were killed instantly in a 2-vehicle crash Saturday about 5 miles north of Brewster, Minn., on a narrow bridge at 7 p.m. Both are former longtime Plymouth county residents.

Sheriff Harry Nackerud of Nobles county, Worthington, Minn., said the Halweg Chevrolet 2 convertible, driven by Vernon, was traveling north on county road 1 and a loaded stock truck driven by Marvin Balfanz, 38 of Brewster was headed south.

"THERE SIMPLY was not enough room on the bridge," the sheriff said, "and the two vehicles crashed almost head on. Both flipped into the right ditch into a creek, the truck on top of the car."

Both Mr. Halweg and his son were pinned in the wreckage Mr. Balfanz was taken in a semi-conscious condition to a Worthington hospital where he is reported improving.

The bodies were taken to Wahlin mortuary at Worthington and brought today to Mauer funeral home in LeMars.

Mr. and Mrs. Halweg, lifetime Struble area residents, left here about a year and a half ago. They were farming near Dundee.

VERNON LIVED here after attending Westmar college. He worked in Sioux City before going to Dundee early this summer to assist his parents.

The elder Mr. Halweg had suffered a broken leg earlier, and it was reported that Vernon was assisting with the farm work. They were returning home from Worthington when the accident took place.

Sheriff Nackerud said cattle in the truck were not killed.

The two deaths brought the total in Nobles county since Jan. 1 to six.

DOUBLE FUNERAL rites will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. John American Lutheran church. Rev. L. L. Belk and Rev. Robert Floy will officiate. Burial will be in LeMars Memorial cemetery under direction of the Mauer funeral home.

Herman Roy Halweg was born April 30, 1902, at Cresco. He came to Plymouth county when a child and he lived near Merrill. He later farmed in LeMars vicinity, before moving to Dundee.
