Craig mayor Onno Johnson dead at 70

Craig mayor Onno Johnson, 70, died unexpectedly Saturday (July 29, 1972). A lifelong Plymouth county and Craig vicinity resident, Mr. Johnson was a retired farmer. He became mayor of Craig in January 1968.

Funeral services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran church, Craig, with Rev. O. K. Anderson officiating. Burial will be in the Craig Lutheran cemetery under direction of the Mauer funeral home.

Mr. Johnson was born Dec. 18, 1901, in Grant township, Plymouth county, the son of the late John H. and Anna (Beckman) Johnson. He married Anna M. Popken Feb. 17, 1927, at Craig.

Mr. Johnson was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran church, a former Plymouth county R.E.C. board member, member of Plymouth county Zoning Commission, secretary Craig Co-Op elevator, was active in church affairs and was a longtime school board director until reorganization.

Survivors are his wife, Anna of Craig; two daughters, Mrs. La Verne (Velda) Benson of Fort Riley, Kan., and Mrs. Fred (Lucille) Tanner of Hartley; two sons, Lester and Melvin, both of rural Le Mars; three brothers, Chris of Craig, Otto of San Jose, Calif., and Harry of Fort Dodge; five sisters, Mrs. Weston (Emma) Richardson of Kingsley; Mrs. Marie Plueger of LeMars, Mrs. Ben (Liz) Meerdink of Rock Valley, Mrs. Vernon (Elsie) Green of Holstein and Mrs. Joseph (Dorothy)
Carrillo of San Jose, Calif., and 14 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers. Harm and Louis.
