JOSEPH GOEBEL
Joseph Goebel, 76, of Sioux City died Tuesday, February 19, 2002, at Sioux City hospital. Mr. Goebel was born December 17, 1925, in Le Mars, Iowa, the son of Henry and Mary (Ruhland) Goebel. He was raised on a farm in Elgin Township northwest of Le Mars and attended country school in Grant Township. On December 26, 1945, he married Darlene Madden at St. Joseph Church Ellendale, rural Merrill. The couple farmed in the early 1950s. He operated the Le Mars Livestock Sale Barn. In the mid-1950s they moved to Sioux City, and he worked at Swift & Co. until starting his own business, Joe’s Surplus in 1957 in Sioux City. He opened a second store in South Sioux City, Nebraska, in 1965. He retired in August of 2001, due to poor health. He is a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Sioux City. Survivors include his wife Darlene; two sons, Bill Goebel and his wife Rosemary of Hinton and Garry Goebel of Sioux City; one daughter Carol Graham and her husband Norman of Sioux City; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandson; one sister, Rose Heeren of Le Mars. Preceded him in death by his daughter Donna Case, his parents, and infant brother and daughter-in-law, Bev Goebel. Funeral services were at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Sioux City with burial in St. Joseph Cemetery Ellendale.
