Since last June deceased had been bravely battling against a complication of liver and stomach troubles and made a determined effort to continue work at his trade, but nearly six weeks ago was compelled to yield and take to his bed, which he was never able to leave unassisted. His advanced age and a constitution weakened by previous illness were factors against his recovery, notwithstanding the tender and ceaseless ministrations of those who held him most dear. The end was known to be not far distant for several days and the sleep that knows no waking in this world came peacefully at 10:30 o'clock Sunday evening.

John Henry Hitzemann was born April 27, 1833, at Schaumburg-Lippe, Germany. He was there baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church. When a young man be learned the shoemaker's trade. Like so many thousands of his countrymen, he became imbued with the idea of seeking his life's fortunes in a new country teeming with opportunities, and accordingly came to the United States in 1856, locating at Bloom Grove, Illinois. Here he was united in marriage with Mary Seiger, who died five years later. The result of this union was two sons and one daughter, who survive.

June 14, 1863, he again married, taking for his wife Kathering Sophia Dorothea Menke, who has remained a worthy, loving helpmeet all the intervening years and survives. To them were born nine children, five sons--August, Charles, Herman, George and Louis--and three daughters--Mrs. Wm. Simeon, Dora, and Emma--all of whom live in Akron and vicinity. Their first son died in infancy. The year of their marriage they went west to Cedar county, Iowa, engaging in farming there until 1885, when they moved to a farm in Johnson township, this county, Five years later they came to Akron, he resuming the shoemaker's trade, and this has since been their home.

Mr. Hitzemann was widely known and highly esteemed by all. Early in life he acquired habits of industry and thrift that were retained during his entire life. He was a man of worthy and useful purposes and possessed estimable qualities of heart and mind.

To those bereft of a devoted and living husband and father, there is extended the condolence of this community.

The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o-clock at the German Lutheran church and was largely attended. Rev. F. Meske conducted the service. Interment was made in the Akron cemetery.
