ANNE GOEBEL RITES HELD HERE TUESDAY

Funeral services for Mrs. Anne Goebel, esteemed former Remsen woman who died in an Omaha hospital Saturday, September 15, after a long period of failing health and terminal illness, were held in St. Mary’s Catholic church here Tuesday morning at 9:30 o’clock.

The requiem high mass was sung by the pastor, the Rt. Rev. Msgr. Frank Schultes.

Mrs. Goebel, who lived in Omaha the past ten years, sharing her home with her three daughters, had been in failing health more than one year following major surgery. During that time, she was able to be about her household work but this summer her condition became more severe and she was a patient in Doctor’s Hospital in Omaha since early August. The end came at one o’clock Saturday afternoon.

Born in Wisconsin
Born at Apple River, Wis., April 14, 1887, she was the daughter of Edward and Sophia Kelly and the first of three children. The family came to Remsen in 1888, settling on the Tom Harvey farm in Fredonia township, five miles northwest of Remsen.

Although they bought an adjoining farm several years later, the Kelly family continued to occupy the Harvey place where the parents spent many years until they retired to their own holdings in 1912.

Upon their retirement, the parents turned the land to their children.

Married in 1911.
Anne Kelly and Michael Goebel, well remembered Remsen man, were married in St. Mary’s church here September 20, 1911, by the late Rev. F. X. Schulte, then pastor.

The coupled settled on the Kelly farm and lived there until 1943 when they moved to their own eighty acres in the neighborhood. It was there shortly later that Mr. Goebel became disabled through sickness which left him an invalid. They remained on the farm until his death April 25, 1945, shortly after which Mrs. Goebel moved to Omaha to join her daughters.

Mrs. Goebel, a lifelong member of the Catholic church, was a loyal member here and in Omaha, a long time member of the Catholic Daughters of America and of the Christian Mothers. She retained her membership in the Remsen groups until her death. She was a highly esteemed woman with many friends, admired for her amiable disposition and her loyalty and general Christian principles, and hundreds of friends came to pay tribute to her memory and to share the grief and extend condolences to the esteemable family.

Survivors.
Surviving, Mrs. Goebel, are her three daughters—Eileen, Ione, and Helen, all at home in Omaha—and one brother, Orin M. Kelly, of LeMars.

Preceding her in death besides her husband and parents was one sister, Mrs. Mae Means, who passed away in LeMars in 1931. Her mother died in 1931 and the father in 1947.

Wake Held in Omaha and Remsen.
Wake was held in Omaha Sunday and the body was brought overland to Remsen Monday morning. Wake was held Monday at the Fisch Funeral Home which had charge of funeral arrangements and direction.

Interment was in St. Mary’s cemetery. Pallbearers were C. W. Brotherton, of Wall Lake, and Robert Schnepf, Frank Lenertz, Ben Sudtelgte, Henry Daldrup and O. H. Huewe, all of Remsen.
