Edmond “Buzz” Leekley, 78, of Akron, Iowa passed away Wednesday, August 28, 2013 at Unity Point Health – St. Luke’s in Sioux City, Iowa.

Services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 31, 2013 at Carlsen Funeral Home – Schroeder Chapel in Akron. Lay Minister, Barb Ross will officiate. Military rites will be conducted by the Hoschler American Legion Post 186 of Akron. Visitation with the family present will be from 9:00 a.m. until service time on Saturday at the funeral home.

Edmond Mark Leekley was born December 7, 1934 in Vermillion, South Dakota, the son of T.S. and Dena (Vogt) Leekley. As a young child, he moved with his family to the Westfield, Iowa area. He attended country school near Westfield and later school in Westfield. His senior year, he attended Akron High School and graduated in 1953.

He was united in marriage to Virginia Whitaker on June 7, 1953 at Plymouth Presbyterian Church, rural Le Mars, Iowa.

Buzz served his country during the Korean Conflict.

Buzz worked for Bob Adams Implement and the Farmer’s Coop in Akron. Later, they farmed near Maurice, Iowa for a year until moving to Odebolt, Iowa. Buzz worked for the Coop in Odebolt for two years until moving to a farm near Westfield. Later, they purchased a farm near Westfield. Buzz and Virginia farmed near Westfield until moving to Akron in 2010.

Buzz was a longtime member of Hoschler American Legion Post 186 for many years. Through the years, Buzz enjoyed fishing and hunting. He enjoyed racing his hobby stock racecar for many years. He also enjoyed playing cards, whether it was a game of pinochle, poker, or pitch. He was an avid fan of the Green Bay Packers. But most of all, he loved the time spent with his family and friends, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He will be greatly missed.

Survivors include his wife of over 60 years, Virginia of Akron; his children: Mark Leekley of Akron; Marcia Dewey of Westfield, IA; Bonnie (Larry) Nason of Sioux City, IA; and Beth (Steve) Wall of North Sioux City, SD; 9 grandchildren; 16 great children; his siblings: Dale (Corrine) Leekley of Kingsley, IA; Ethel (Stan) Krosch of Kingsley, IA; Polly (Joe) Smith of St. Albans, WV; and Leola Mueller of Sioux City, IA; and numerous nieces, nephews, and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister: Thea Leekley; a son in law: Jerry Dewey; and a great grandson: Andrew Leekley.
