Al Schenkelberg, 86, of Le Mars, died Sunday Nov. 27, 2005, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars, while recovering from surgery.

Alfred William Schenkelberg was born June 13, 1919, at Halbur, Iowa, the son of William and Frances (McGrane) Schenkelberg. Al grew up and attended elementary school in Halbur and graduated from high school at Carroll High School.

He married Virginia Snyder on Sept. 6, 1942, in Carmel, Calif., just prior to going overseas, during World War II. Al served with the U.S. Army and was stationed overseas in India, with the China-Burma-India Theatre. He was a Personnel Officer with the 20th General Hospital. Following the War, he returned home and the couple lived for several years in Carroll, before moving to Le Mars in 1959. Al was a John Deere dealer in Le Mars for many years.

Al was a longtime member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Le Mars and a life member of the Knights of Columbus, Trinity Council 1466. He was also a member of the American Legion, Wasmer Post 241 in Le Mars and a member of the World War II Last Man's Club.

Al was a people person, always enjoying good conversation, a good story, or even better, a good joke. The welcoming smile, and twinkle in his eye made him a friend to those who crossed his path. In earlier days, he enjoyed golfing, fishing, hunting, and camping with his family. For many years, Al and Virginia enjoyed wintering in Mesa, Ariz. Recently he continued to enjoy having coffee with his friends, and playing cards, especially with the Holy Thursday group. Al enjoyed visits at home from his many friends, and from his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren; each generation finding out what it meant to have your plow cleaned.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years Virginia Schenkelberg of Le Mars; a son Allan Schenkelberg and his wife, Karen of Minneapolis, Minn.; a daughter, Mary Wrocklage of Port Huron, Mich.; a daughter-in-law, Colleen Wade and her husband, Richard of Sioux City; a son-in-law, Larry Dalton and his wife, Caron of Le Mars; 13 grandchildren: Tricia Albertson, Becky Graves, Bill Dalton, Mindy Dalton, Cheri Welle, Laura Cross, Mark Schenkelberg, Nick Schenkelberg, Kelli Brandts, Jessica Wade, Penelope Austin, Chelley Frohardt, and Casey Mikolayek; nine great-grandchildren; three brothers, Bill Schenkelberg and his wife, Jean, Larry Schenkelberg, and Marvin Schenkelberg, all of Carroll; and a sister, Donna Snyder of Carroll.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Sandy Dalton; two sons, Scott and Robert Schenkelberg; two granddaughters, Jaylene and Lisa Dalton; two stillborn grandchildren, Theresa and Larry Dalton; and a brother, Paul Schenkelberg.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Le Mars with the Rev. Kevin Richter presiding. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Le Mars with military honors provided at the gravesite by Wasmer Post 241 of the American Legion.

Visitation will be anytime after 3 p.m. Monday at the Feuerstein Funeral Home in Le Mars. There will be a rosary at 4 p.m., a Scriptural wake service at 7 p.m., and a Knights of Columbus rosary at 8 p.m., all at the funeral home on Monday.

Pallbearers will be Nick Schenkelberg, Mark Schenkelberg, Bill Dalton, Brian Albertson, Bill Welle, Chelley Frohardt, and Penelope Austin.
