From the Tuesday, September 20, 1949 LeMars Daily Sentinel:

John Peter Weis, 89, Struble Resident, Buried Monday

Funeral services for John Peter Weis, a resident of Struble for the past 25 years, were held Monday at St. John's Catholic church in Struble and burial was in the Struble cemetery. The Rev. Clement Flannery officiated.

Mr. Weis, who was 89, died Thursday night at the Sacred Heart hospital. He was born Oct. 5, 1862, at Spruce Creek near Bellevue, Iowa, but lived most of his life in the vicinity of Alton and Ireton, before moving to Struble.

He operated a hotel in Ireton from 1905 to 1918. Survivors include the widow, Mary; a son, Dr. Howard Weis of Davenport, Iowa; a daughter, Mrs. Edna Pohler of Iowa City; a brother, Jacob F. Weis of Struble, and two sisters, Mrs. P. H. Vanderwicken of Okoboji, Iowa, and Mrs. Margaret Barrett of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

The Luken funeral home of LeMars had charge of arrangements.

Poster's note: The LeMars Daily Sentinel account clearly states that Mr. Weis was 89 but gives his year of birth as 1862. A death notice in the Hawarden Independent gives his age as 86 but does not give a year of birth. According to the 1900 Federal Census, Mr. Weis was born in October 1862.

According to the 1925 Iowa census, Mr. Weis was the son of Lena Thoma and Barney Weis. From several family trees on line, it appears as though his wife was the former Mary May Vander Wicken.
