LeMars Veteran of First World War Passes Away

LeMars, Ia.—Special: Herman Beck, 47, a veteran of the first world war, died in the veteran’s hospital at Minneapolis, where he had been a patient several years. Mr. Beck was gassed while serving overseas. He formerly was in the automobile business here.

Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Marie Beck, of LeMars; four brothers, August of Leeds, Charles and Albert of Hinton, and Edward of LeMars; and four sisters, Mrs. John Hoffman of Sioux City, Mrs. Edith Prust of LeMars and Mrs. M. J. Kounkel and Mrs. Rose Kounkel, both of Seattle.

Herman H. Beck Dies In Hospital Served in Army During World War

Herman H. Beck, 48, well known Le Mars resident, died at midnight Sunday, October 31, at the Veterans hospital in Minneapolis. Mr. Beck had been a sufferer for five years from tuberculosis.

Mr. Beck lived in Plymouth county all his life and was born in Lincoln township, July 4, 1895, where he grew up and later came to Le Mars. He was an auto mechanic and conducted a garage and automobile business for some years in Le Mars. He served in the army during the World War and was in action in France. He was a member of Wasmer Post, American Legion. He was a faithful member of St. John's Lutheran church.

He is survived by his wife, who, was before her marriage, Marie Adden, four sisters, Mrs. Edith Prust, of Le Mars, Mrs. Clara Hoffman of Sioux City, Mrs. Minnie Kounkcl of Leeds, Mrs. Rose Kounkel of Seattle, Wash., and four brothers, Ed Beck, of Le Mars, Charles and Albert Beck, living south of Le Mars and August Beck of Leeds.

The funeral arrangements had not been completed last evening.

Military Honors Accorded Late Herman Beck

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon in St. John’s church for Herman Beck World War veteran, who died Sunday at the veterans hospital, in Minneapolis after a long illness. Services were conducted by Rev. L. L. Belk, pastor of the church. Four brother and two brothers-in-law acted as pallbearers.

Members of Company D. and the American Legion were in attendance. A firing squad gave a parting salute and bugler's taps were sounded at the graveside.

Mauer Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
