Deceased Succumbs to Slight Attack of Illness Worn Down by the Weight of Four Score Years.

William Schumann for nearly fifty years a resident of Plymouth County died at his home, 501 Third Avenue SE. on Tuesday, September 25th after a very brief illness. A few days days before his death he contracted a cold which effected his lungs. He had been subject to asthmatic troubles at various times but of late had been apparently in the best of health with the exception of ailments natural to a man of his great age. He was 81 years of age at the time of his death.

William Schumann was born in the village of Soldine, Germany on July 9, 1842, and grew to manhood in his native land and served a term in the army in accordance with the laws of that country. In 1868 he came to America and settled at Milwaukee Wis. While living at that place he united in marriage with Miss Amelia Keil, who has been his faithful spouse for more than fifty years.

Mr. Schumann came to Plymouth County in 1874, and bought land in Stanton Township, where he lived for many years before to Le Mars to live. Mr. Schumann and his wife went through all the vicissitudes which beset the early settlers and suffered hardships through the grasshopper times. Their faith in the country was rewarded and better times came and Mr. Schumann industry and integrity built up a fine farm and became noted as a most successful man at his vocation. About eighteen years ago Mr. and Mrs. Schumann left the cares of the farm to the younger generation and came to Le Mars where they established a comfortable home in which to enjoy the autumn of their life.

Besides his wife Mr. Schumann is survived by three daughters and two sons who are Mrs. Emma Reints, Hollywood Cal., Mrs. Frank Dobbert of Struble, Mrs. Phillip E. Held, of Hinton, William Schumann of Stanton township and Albert Schumann of San Diego Cal. There are also twenty-one grandchildren.

William Schumann was a splendid type of citizen, rugged, hearty and virile, and highly respected in the community where he lived for nearly half a century. He was honest, fearless, and always a helpful neighbor. He possessed the spirit of the pioneer, who was always glad to lend a hand in their work and also in making accommodations of a loan to some less thrifty in pioneer days, when money was a scarce article. He was a devoted husband and affectionate father and a friend and companion of many men, who like himself, did their part in developing the resources of this part of the country. He will be greatly missed by many old time associates.
