Mrs. Catherine Waldon Called

Lived Near Kingsley Since the Spring of 1892

Kingsley, Ia., Feb. 24. Special: Funeral services were held in the Methodist Episcopal church in Kingsley Thursday at 2 p.m., Rev. John B. Walker, local pastor officiating, for Catherine Walden.

Catherine McLain Owens, the first born of a family of two children of Thomas and Helen Owens was born August 24, 1868, in Woodbury County, Union township. When a child of three she went to make her home with Henry and Mary Ashton of Ida county with whom she lived until her marriage on September 15, 1886, to Myron Byron Walden, at Cherokee, Iowa.

In December 1890, Mr. and Mrs. Walden moved into this vicinity and lived near Kingsley until the spring of 1892 when they moved to town where they have resided since.

To them was born eight children, Clyde M. Walden, Sioux City, Ia.; Mrs. Mamie Smith, Santa Barbara, Calif.; Dwight R. Walden, Kingsley, Iowa; Raymond A. Walden, Tulsa, Oklahoma; twin daughters, Mrs. Nettie A. Treptow and Mrs. Nellie B. Ward, both of Kingsley; Mrs. Catherine Walters, Pierson, Iowa; and Arthur F. Walden, Kingsley.

Mrs. Walden united with the Methodist church in 1915. She was devoted to the church and found its services a source of comfort and blessing. She had been a member of the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union for many years. Her membership in the Woman’s Relief Corps dated back to the time when its members were either daughters or wives of the soldiers of the Grand Army of the Republic. Her father was an old soldier, who preceded her in death 27 years ago. Her suffering was intense through five long weeks which suffering she bore with Christian fortitude.

Shortly before the end came she declared that God had been good to her and that all was well.

During her last sickness all of her children except Mamie have been by her side at least for a time.

She is survived by her husband, her foster mother, Mrs. Mary Halton now in her 81st year at Correctionville, Iowa seven half brothers, a brother, Frank Owens, of Imogene, Iowa, and her eight children, many other relative and a large group of friends and neighbors who mourn her passing.

She had attained the age of 61 years, 5 months and 23 days.

Burial was in the Kingsley cemetery, E. H. Derby funeral director.

“They never quite leave us, our friends who have passed. Thro the shadows of death to the sunlight above. A thousand sweet memories are holding them fast to the place they blessed with their presence and love.”
