Ella M. Johnson, 86, of Akron, Iowa, died Thursday, November 23, 2000, at the Akron City Convalescent Center.

Funeral services were at 1:30 p.m. Monday, November 27, 2000, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Akron, Iowa, with Reverend Dan Stegan officiating. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery in Akron. Visitation was from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, November 26, 2000, with the family present from 6 p.m. to 8 p. m. with a 7 p.m. prayer service at the Schroeder Funeral Home in Akron.

Ella was born November 15, 1914 in Westfield, Iowa, the daughter of Ira F. "Frank" and Elvera (Sorensen) Smith. She graduated from Westfield High School. She married Melvin Johnson July 8, 1933, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She worked as a waitress at the Pantry Cafe in Le Mars and, also worked at Vander Meer bakery in Le Mars. Mrs. Johnson was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She served as a 4-H leader for many years and taught Sunday School at Immanuel Lutheran for many years.

Survivors include: Her husband, Melvin; two sons, Clifford, of Akron, and Russell and his wife Judy of Sac City, Iowa; one brother, Virgil Smith and his wife Joyce, of Akron; 7 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by her parents, one baby daughter, one sister, Hope Harbeck, and four brothers, Jack, Bob, Harry, and Ward Smith.

The organist was Carol Harris who played "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" for the congregation. - Lunch was served at the church following the committal service at the cemetery. Pallbearers were grandchildren Gary Johnson, Debra Johnson Peterson, Gregg Johnson, Steve Johnson, Brenda Johnson Plain, Scott Johnson, and Brian Johnson.
