Another sad occurrence, which takes away another one of the old and esteemed residents of this part of the country, was the death of Mrs. Henry Grage, which occurred at her home southeast of town last Monday night at eleven o’clock, the result of a hemorrhage. The end came utterly unexpected, as Mrs. Grage was apparently in perfect health even on the very day of her death. She retired at an early hour Monday evening and awoke at eleven o’clock with a hemorrhage. Her husband was aroused at once and he was making preparations for assistance to his wife, when suddenly she passed away—only a few moments after the attack was discovered.
Anna Margarethe Fridericke Grage, who maiden name was Loeck, was born April 8, 1846 in Stolck, Schleswig. She married J. H. Grage on the 3rd of February 1871 and with him and two children came to Benton county, Iowa in 1880. Three years later in 1883 they moved to Remsen and settled on the farm about seven miles south east of here. Six years ago the now deceased had a very severe attack of lung trouble but seemed to be in the best of health since then. The end came therefore very sudden and unexpectedly last Monday night at elven o’clock as the result of a hemorrhage similar to the one of six years ago.
Three children, Jochim P. Grage, Mrs. Margaretha Sophia Kahl, Mrs. Emma Friedericke Hansen and a number of grandchildren are left to mourn her demise besides the aged husband.
The funeral will be tomorrow morning at eleven o’clock from the residence.
Mrs. Grage was a lovable Christian woman of whom nothing but the best may be spoken. She was a good mother and reared a family of excellent children, who are sorely stricken in her death. To her friends and neighbors, in fact to all with whom she came in contact, Mrs. Grage was always friendly and loving and she will indeed be missed in the years to come. – Remsen Bell-Enterprise, October 29, 1914, page 1, column 4.
