Early Settler In Akron Dies Mrs. Elizabeth Metz, Mother Of Six Sons

Mrs. Elizabeth Metz, 69, a long time resident of Akron, died at her home there Thursday.

Mrs. Metz was born April 17, 1872 in Montreal, Canada, and came to this territory about 40 years ago. Her husband, Adolph Metz, a well known Akron businessman, died in 1938.

Surviving are six sons, Edward, Louis, Clarence, Clifford and Royal, all of Akron, and John of San Francisco; three daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Conway of Sioux City, Mrs. Frank Montagne of Akron and Mrs. Leslie Ross of Omaha; one brother and one sister.

The funeral was held Saturday in St. Patrick's church at Akron, Rev. Chas. Ernst officiating, and interment made in the Akron cemetery.

HOLD LAST RITES FOR AN ESTEEMED AKRON WOMAN

Mrs. Elizabeth Metz Had Been Resident Here Since 1903

This paper made brief mention last week of the death of Mrs. Elizabeth Metz, one of Akron’s best known and esteemed residents, at her home here on Thursday morning, March 6, 1941, at 8 o’clock, after a lingering illness. After an operation at the Mayo clinic, Rochester, Minn., a couple of years ago, her condition was much improved for a time, but there was a recurrence of her ailment and her health gradually declined for a number of weeks prior to the final summons.

Mrs. Metz was born April 29, 1872, in Montreal, Canada, and attained the age of nearly 69 years. She came to this territory nearly sixty years ago. In 1896 she was united in marriage with Adolph Metz in Sioux City, Iowa. In 1903 they moved to Akron and Mr. Metz engaged in the harness and shoe business here for many years, preceding his wife in death on October 26, 1938.

Mrs. Metz is survived by six sons, Edward, Louis and Clarence, who recently moved from here to Holstein, Iowa; Clifford, and Royal, of Akron,and John, of San Francisco, Calif.; three daughters, Mrs. Frank Montagne, of Akron; Mrs. Dorothy Conway, of Sioux City, and Mrs. Leslie Ross, of Omaha, Nebr.; one brother, Wm. Muir, of Merrill, Iowa, and one sister, Mrs. W. J. Page, of Sioux City.

Mrs. Metz was a kind and devoted wife and mother, and a loyal, helpful and sympathetic friend and neighbor. It is doubtful if there ever lived in Akron a person who did more for the aid and relief of people in sickness and distress than she, over a period of many years. Without regard to race or creed, nor how humble or obscure the case might be the suffering and needy met with immediate response from her kind and sympathetic nature, and all in a quiet and unostentatious way. There are many who can testify to having received from this splendid woman words of kindly encouragement and material assistance when it was most needed.

Mrs. Metz was for many years a member of the executive board of the local American Red Cross chapter and active in its good work. She also held membership in the local Women’s Relief Corps and in the Catholic Women’s League. She will be truly missed and mourned in the community where she spent so many years of useful and helpful service for others.

Funeral services were held Saturday morning at 9 o’clock in St. Patrick’s Catholic church, Rev.Fr. Chas. Ernest officiating. Many friends were in attendance to pay a last tribute of respect.

The pallbearers were Dr. A. J. Kessler, Alvin Manning, Chas. Burnight, Frank Trautt, Arthur Montague and A. J. Claeys. Interment was in the Catholic cemetery here.

Relatives who came from a distance were Edward and Louis Metz, of Holstein, Iowa; Mrs. Dorothy Conway, of Sioux City; Mrs. Leslie Ross, of Omaha; Mrs. Wm. J. Page, of Sioux City, and Wm. and John Muir, of Merrill.
