Hilda Elise Mohning was born on November 4, 1922 near Marcus, Iowa, the daughter of Jakob and Elise (Wittel) Kuttler, who immigrated from Germany. She completed the 8th grade until an accident involving her father required her to stay home and work on the family farm. She would later resume her education and earned a G.E.D. in 1969, thus stressing to her family the value of education.

On December 12, 1946 Hilda and Arnold L. Mohning were united in marriage at Christ Lutheran Church in Remsen, Iowa. The couple made their home in Remsen and Oyens before moving to the Mohning family farm in 1960. This union was blessed with nine children; Linda (Russ) Mayrose, Ronald Mohning, Steve (Kris) Mohning, Rosanne (Dave) Olson, John (Bonnie) Mohning, Karen Bugge, Tom (Deb) Mohning, Allan (Kathy) Mohning and Laurie Mohning.

The family farmed in Plymouth County for many years. During those years, Hilda worked as a nurses’ aide and was known by her co-workers as a caring caregiver. They retired in 1984 and moved to Le Mars. Arnold passed away on March 9, 1997.

Hilda was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Le Mars. Throughout the years she participated in Circle, Altar Guild, Funeral Lunch Committee, quilting and taught Sunday School.

Along with her children, Hilda is survived by 21 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Vicki Ott of Le Mars, Iowa and Margaret Mohning of Paonia, Colorado; and many special nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded by her parents; husband Arnold; an infant son, Ronald; and a son-in-law Charles Rollinger.
