A Fatal Kick. Hans Rex, a livery man at Remsen, died on Monday night from the effects of a kick he received from a horse on New Year’s day. The horse kicked Rex in the region off the heart, while he was walking behind the animal in its stall. Rex has conducted a livery stable in Remsen for the past four years. He leaves a wife and one daughter, Mrs. Fred Lemke, of Sioux City. The funeral was held in Remsen on Wednesday. – Le Mars Semi-Weekly Sentinel, Jan. 9, 1903, page 4.

Injuries Fatal. Hans Rex of Remsen died on Monday from injuries inflicted by a horse on New Year’s day. Mr. Rex was engaged in the livery business at Remsen and on New Year’s day he was severely kicked by a horse, three ribs being broken, besides a severe cut on the head. One foot of the horse struck him over the heart. He was taken to his home and all that medical science could do for him was done but he never rallied from the injury and died on Monday. The funeral was held on Wednesday. He leaves ??? and one daughter, Mrs. Fred Lemke in Sioux City. He was about ??? of age and had been engaged in the livery business at Remsen for ??? four years. Note: Burial records can be found at Christ Lutheran Church, Remsen, Iowa. Both the obituary and church records spell the last name as “Rex”. The gravestone has “Rix”. His wife’s name was Anna.
