William C. Albright, 70, former Merrill resident, died at a Sioux City hospital Saturday night, April 19, from injuries suffered in a fall down a hotel elevator shaft from the second floor to the basement.
The mishap occurred at the Jackson Hotel, where Mr. Albright was employed as an elevator operator. Investigation revealed the elevator was defective. The elevator could be operated while the doors were open.
William Conrad Albright was born Sept. 13, 1887, in Liberty township, Plymouth County, the son of Frank and Barbara Albright. He was married to Mabel Fletcher in 1913 at LeMars.
He had owned and operated a grocery store in Merrill for 40 years before moving to Sioux City in 1951. His residence there was at 4116 Harrison St.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Donald, of Newton; two daughters, Mrs. Wilma Lundy of Sioux City and Mrs. Ruth Fry of Merrill; three brothers, Frank of LeMars, Ed of Sioux City and George Greenwood of Merrill; five sisters, Mrs. Margaret Rozell, Mrs. Elizabeth Cumihow and Miss Emma Albright of Merrill, Mrs. Florence Berger of Hinton and Mrs. Alice Lucey of LeMars; and eight grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 22, at the Wesley Methodist church in Sioux City. Burial was at the Merrill Hill-Side Cemetery.
Pallbearers: Lowell Bristow, Everett Tryon, Leonard Albright, Charles Rosenow, Keith Albright, and Philip Jackson.
A large number of friends from Merrill attended the funeral. Mrs. Albright was ill in bed and unable to attend the rites. A tape recording was made of the services for her.
Mrs. Albright’s sister, Miss Clara Fletcher, who at present is taking care of their sister, Mrs. Minnie Fletcher, who is ill at Reliance, S.D., came for the funeral and then returned to Reliance. A fourth sister, Mrs. Sadie Courtright, was buried April 12, at Clinton, Minn.
