Mrs. Mercy Stinton Spent Girlhood In Adaville Vicinity

Dell Rapids (S. D.) Tribune: Mrs. Mercy Stinton, pioneer resident of Dell Rapids, died early Tuesday morning at the Fred Halls home in Sioux Falls in whose home she had been ill for the last nine months.

Mercy Harriet Whitney was born in Jackson county, Iowa, January 14, 1854. During her childhood she moved with her parents to Plymouth county, Iowa. On July 22, 1873, she was united in marriage to Alfred Stinton at his father's farm, one mile east of Adaville, Plymouth county. They lived on a farm in this county for five years, when they moved to South Dakota and filed on a claim ten miles, west of Dell Rapids in 1879. Here they lived for twenty-two years, moving into town in 1901. Mr. Stinton died November l3, 1921, at their home in Dell Rapids.

After his death Mrs. Stinton.lived in or near Dell Rapids until the last months of her illness, which were spent in Sioux Falls, the place of her death. No children were born to this union.

Two Children were adopted and both preceded the Stintons in death . They also made a home for George W Roberts , a nephew, .for a number of years and Mrs. Nels P. Anderson made her home with them for nine years. Mrs. Stinton was a member of the United Brethren church in Iowa and since living here attended the Methodist church. She was a member of the local Rebekah lodge.

She leaves to mourn, three brothers, James, Charlie and M Whitney, all of Woonsocket, S. D.. and one sister, Mrs. Laurie Loard, in Michigan. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services were held Friday, March 6, at the Methodist Episcopal church in Dell Rapids, conducted by the pastor. Rev. Harold W. Wagar, and burial was in the Dell Rapids cemetery beside her husband, the late Al Stinton. Who died ten years ago last November.

Relatives and friends from Plymouth county who attended the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Glen Stinton; George and Tine Stinton, Mr. and Mrs Aug. Helm, Mrs. Martha Husted, of Adaville vicinity; Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Hilliker, Mrs. John Hanson and Waldo Hilliker, of Akron.
