LAST RITES ARE HELD. John Koerner Was Well Known Carpenter in Remsen Many Years.
Remsen Bell Enterprise: John Koerner died at the home of his mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Koerner, last Thursday morning from a combination of lung and stomach trouble that manifested itself three months previously. He was 48 years of age, a native of Joliet, Ill., and is survived by his mother, two sisters, three brothers and a cousin, who has virtually been a member of the family.
John Julius Koerner was born on a farm near the city of Joliet, Ill, February 12, 1884, and at the age of six years his parents moved to Remsen and became permanent residents.
Those left to mourn are his mother and Mrs. Frank Bishton, all of Remsen; Charles Koerner, of Elkton, S.D., and Clarence Koerner, of Sheldon, Iowa. There is one cousin, Mrs. Grace Pfaff Edwards, of Sioux City, who from childhood was a member of the Koerner household and is considered one of the family.
Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon conducted by the Rev. Hugo Weichelt, pastor of St. Paul’s Evangelical church.
Among those from out of town at the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Joe Kaiser, of Marcus; Mr. and Mrs. Will Miller, of Paullina; Albert Koerner, Mrs. Bertha Koerner, Mr. and Mrs. Claud Whitney, Harold Koerner and C. Less than 10 months after the grave was closed over the last earthly remains of the head of the family, John Koerner, next in age in the family circle, last Thursday answered the summons to lay down the burden of life as he slipped quietly away into his couch upon the hill where since last August lay sleeping his father and lifelong companion, Louis Koerner. John died at the home of his mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Koerner, last Thursday morning from a combination of lung and stomach trouble that had manifested itself but three months previously. He was 48 years of age, a native of Joliet, Ill., and is survived by his mother, two sisters, three brothers and a cousin who has virtually been a member of the family.
Mr. Koerner went into failing health about three months ago, according to his mother, and although he was able to occupy himself somewhat with his usual manual labor, his early symptoms showed signs of fatigue and three weeks prior to his death his condition had become such as to forbid even the most trifling physical effort. Fighting stubbornly against the overwhelming odds that hid themselves from perception, he continued to mingle with his associates until Friday, June 10, when there came a sudden breakdown and he was forced to the sickroom from whence to emerge only amidst the tonal peal of the funeral choir.

Ever since then the Koerner family has been a part of this community and John, the oldest of the children and who chose the single life, never left the family roof. Note: John Julius Koerner doesn’t appear to have a gravestone, but he could be buried in Block 2 East, Lot 42, with his parents, Louis & Lizzie Koerner.
