Our popular cigar maker, H. Reif, died at his home in Remsen Monday, July 13, at 5 a.m. at the age of 37 years from apoplexy of the heart. Mr. Reif has been of failing health for a number of years, but he was at most times able to be around and work at cigar making. He was sober, industrious and quiet, and therefore well liked, so that he was able to earn a good existence for himself and family, and lay up a sum for the future. He leaves a wife and two sons ten and twelve years of age. The funeral was very well attended and very imposing. Rev. M. Bruggemann preached a sermon at the house of mourning and then the cortege marched, headed by the Remsen band in parade dress to the cemetery. The corpse was held in the guard house on the cemetery, a telegram having just been received announcing that the mother of the deceased was on her way here. The old lady arrived Wednesday and was given an opportunity to see the dear features of her beloved son, after which the burial took place. – Le Mars Globe, Saturday, July 18, 1896, page 3.

Note: Henry’s wife was Friedericka (Busch) Reif. After Henry’s death, she got married again to Samuel Wentz. Neither Henry nor Friedericka have a gravestone, but Friedericka purchased lot 108 in Block 1 East in 1896 – at the time of Henry’s death. It is presumed that the two of them are buried in this lot.
