At his home in Alcester, S. D., at about 8:30 o'clock Thursday evening, February 9, August Ludwig, Sr., father of our townsman, August Ludwig, surrendered his life at the age of 88 years, 4 months and 8 days. He had been practically helpless for about two years, suffering from infection in his leg, which terminated in gangrene. Mr. Ludwig was one of the earliest settlers of South Dakota, having lived continuously in Union county for six-one years, and until a few years ago living on his farm south of Alcester.

He was the father of six children, five boys and one girl. One son, Rudolph, died at the age of 49 years and the one daughter passed away at the age of 2 years. Those surviving him are his second wife; August Ludwig, of Craig; Adolph Ludwig, of Alcester, S. D.; Dr. Herman Ludwig, of San Diego, Calif., and Ed Ludwig, who operates the old homestead south of Alcester.

The funeral was held Monday at the Lutheran church three miles south and one mile west of Alcester and burial was made in the cemetery at that place
