This community was shocked to hear of the death of Mrs. Ernst Schumacher, of Remsen, in California, where she went to visit with her sisters and brother. Mrs. Schumacher was formerly Miss Minnie Hewicker, of Henry township, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Hewicker, now deceased and spent her life here until her marriage to Mr. Schumacher, making their home in Remsen. Relatives and friends here were sorely grieved late Saturday when the announcement came of the sudden death of Mrs. Ernest J. Schumacher, prominent Remsen woman who passed away in a hospital in Long Beach, Cal., following an operation for goiter. Mrs. Schumacher was 46 years old, and had been a resident of Remsen throughout her life. She is survived by her sorrowing widower, two sons, two daughters, three sisters and three brothers. Funeral services and burial will be in Remsen Friday afternoon, with services in St. Paul’s Evangelical church.
Mrs. Schumacher, with her husband, left Remsen on March 10 for a contemplated rest in California, to visit with brothers and sisters. They departed in the highest spirits and left word that they would return within a month. The trip westward was made in company with a brother, Walter Hewicker, a Los Angeles attorney, who had visited here for two weeks.
For years Mrs. Schumacher had been suffering with goiter trouble and while in the West she was advised to seek medical aid, and an operation was resorted to, with dire results. Word of her decision to submit to an operation was received with gratification by relatives here, but a few days later the stunning message of her death came as a blast to all the happiness that was left behind in her home and family circle.
Mrs. Schumacher was born on a farm south of Remsen January 15, 1891, and with her parents lived there until at the age of 16 years she came to Remsen with her parents. She lived here with them until the time of her marriage March 2, 1910, to Ernest J. Schumacher, a well known Remsen building contractor.
After their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Schumacher continued to make their home in Remsen and were substantial and highly respected residents here ever since.
Mrs. Schumacher was one of Remsen’s outstanding citizens, and a woman who held the highest regard of her every acquaintance. She was a staunch member of the Evangelical church for many years and in her home life through her excellent example reflected the truths and the spirit which she gained in her early day spiritual training. She was a most devoted wife and mother; a woman who commanded the highest respect and the love of everyone with whom she came in contact. In social circles she was a general favorite and she will be missed with many sad longings by those with whom she has been associated, while the little family circle will forever remember her as one who deserved the best of every thought that can be accorded the memory of a wife and mother and sister.
After five days of heartrending anxiety the bowed-down husband arrived home at an early our today with his precious cargo. The body is now in state at the Schumacher home and the funeral service will be held Friday afternoon beginning at 1:30 o’clock at the home and followed by services in Christ [St. Paul?] Lutheran church.

The funeral of Mrs. E. J. Schumacher, well known Remsen lady who passed away in California, was held last Friday afternoon, with services in St. Paul’s Evangelical church and was largely attended as a fitting mark of esteem of this lovable woman.
