REMSEN. From the Bell-Enterprise.
Deep regret and profound sympathy was spread over the city last eveing by the death of Ms. Joseph Hamman, which occurred at the home of her mother, Mrs. Whitmer, at twenty-five minutes past four. Mrs. Hamman passed away after four weeks of serious illness which followed a lifelong affliction with anaemia. She was but twenty two years old and aside from the parents, the husband, sisters and brother, she is survived by an infant girl. Mrs. Hamman was, before her marriage, Emma Marie Whitmer. She was born on a farm in this county on April 10th, 1891, and came to Remsen with her parents when still a girl. Four years ago she married Joseph Hamman, of Remsen. Ever since Emma Whitmer was six years old she was trouble with sickness, and for the past four weeks she was confined. Three weeks ago she was taken to the home of her mother where the best of care was administered, but during the late days it was constantly expected that death would soon relieve her of her sufferings. Shortly before the fatal hour Mrs. Hamman was given the last rites in the Evangelical Lutheran faith, by Rev. J. P. Guenther of Christ church. Those who are left mourn her early death are her parents; her sisters, Ida Whitmer and Mrs. Frank Boever, of Remsen; her brother, Elmer, who is in the employ of the Illinois Central railroad; the sorrowing widower and the little child who cannot feel her loss for years to come. Mrs. Emma Hamman was truthfully a young woman of splendid character, whose friends in this community are limited only by the number of population. From every voice come words of praise of her character and manner, and the deepest sympathy is on every hand extended those who in her last hours sought to comfort and strengthen her. The funeral will be held Saturday. At one o’clock in the afternoon Rev. Guenther will conduct the ceremonies at the Whitman home and at 1:30 o’clock services will be held in Christ church. – Le Mars Semi-Weekly Sentinel, Dec. 23, 1913, page 2.
