CRASHES INTO STALLED AUTO. Ernest Lage, Remsen Youth, in Speeding Motorcycle, Fatally Hurt. TRUCKERS FADE AWAY. Victim is Succored By Francis Nemmers, of Le Mars.
Ernest Lage, a Remsen youth, aged 30, met fate Thursday night on the highway two miles southwest of Le Mars while speeding on his motorcycle to Sioux City about eight o’clock where he was bent on an errand to obtain repairs for machinery for a read crew with which he was employed near Remsen. About who miles south of Le Mars he passed a car driven by Francis Nemmers, of this city, and further on a little ways came on a stalled truck. He went around this truck and crashed into another parked a little farther on. His left leg was nearly torn off and he suffered numerous cuts and bruises and internal injuries. Mr. Nemmers picked up the injured man and brought him to the hospital here. The truckers disappeared.
Mr. Lage was brought to the Sacred Heart hospital and surgeons from the Le Mars clinic attended to his injuries which proved fatal. He died Friday morning from the effects of the accident.
Truckers are sought. One of the trucks, presumably the vehicle into which Lage crashed, was labeled with a Sioux county number, and County Attorney George Sturges and the police authorities are investigating the tragedy. Sheriff Hugh Maxwell has obtained the number displayed on one of the trucks and found on inquiry in Orange City, that the owner of the machine has disappeared.
Born in Remsen. Ernest Lage was born in Remsen March 6, 1900, and was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Lage. His father was section foreman at Remsen for thirteen years and an early settler in that town. The family moved to Larchwood in 1915 and lived there until 1920 when they moved to Lake Benton, Minn., where they now reside.
Ernest lived at home until 1919 when he embarked for himself, living and working at various places. During the summer of 1929 he worked for the Herman Deitering road grading crew of Remsen and the past winter he was employed on the Charles Treinen farm in Meadow township. This spring he returned to the road grading crew and was helping put machinery in order for the season’s work.
He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Lage, Lake Benton, and the following sisters and brothers: William, in Idaho; Alfred, farming near Holstein, Iowa; Herman Omaha; George, at home; Mrs. Herman Schutt, Brandt, S.D.; Mrs. Henry Schutt, Toronto, S. D.; Mrs. Gus Koehnk, Pipestone, Minn.
The funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at St. Paul’s Evangelical church in Remsen, Rev. Hugo Weichelt officiating, and interment made in the Remsen cemetery. – Le Mars Semi-Weekly Sentinel, April 15, 1930, page 1.
