HAD SUFFERED MUCH. Death Relieves Former Remsen Woman After Two Months Illness. Funeral at Remsen.Mrs. Edward Jurgensen, for the past five years a resident of Dell Rapids, S. D., and for many years residing in Remsen, passed away at her home last Wednesday afternoon at the age of 72 years and five months, after suffering from the effects of a paralytic stroke, coupled with pneumonia, for about two months. The deceased is survived by her husband, five children, two sisters and a brother. The body was brot to Remsen for burial and the funeral was held Sunday afternoon.
Mrs. Jorgensen suffered a paralytic stroke at her home early in March, and was helpless ever since. Shortly after the attack pneumonia came to make her suffering more severe, and for a number of weeks she suffered intensely altho the best care and attention was given her constantly. She bore her ailments bravely to the end, but her relatives were conscious of the approach of her last days for some time previous to her passing. Death relieved her of her suffering at 1:15 o’clock Wednesday afternoon, April 24. The body was brought to Remsen, arriving her Friday evening and was taken to the home of her daughter, Mrs. John Haack, in town.
Ida Jurgensen was born on November 11, 1845, in the village Mecklinburg, Strelitz, Germany, a daughter of Christian and Christina Ruetz. At the age of twenty-four years she came to the United States and made her first home at Coal Valley, Ill. There she met Edward Jurgensen, and they were married shortly after her arrival. For seven years the couple remained at Coal Valley, and in 1876 they moved to a farm near Keystone, Benton county, Iowa, where they lived and prospered for nine years, coming to Remsen in 1885. They lived in town while here, and made many warm friends. Both were members of the Christ Lutheran church, Mrs. Jurgensen, being possessed of a strong Christian character, was one of the leading members of the Ladies Aid, in which society she labored unceasingly thruout her life. In 1913 Mr. and Mrs. Jurgensen moved to Dell Rapids, S.D., where the family is still at home. To their union five children were born, all living. They are William and Fred, Dell Rapids; Edward, Peru, Nebr., Mrs. Anton Faber, Mitchell, S. D. and Mrs. John Haack, Remsen. She is also survived by 32 grand children, two sisters and one brother.
The funeral was held Sunday afternoon with services at the Haack home and at Christ Lutheran church, conducted by Rev. J. P. Guenther. Rev. Guenther gave a touching sermon, taking his text from Mathew 5,4: “Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted.” The funeral services were very largely attended, the deceased having for so long been prominent in a circle of close and loving friends, and highly esteemed. – Remsen Bell-Enterprise, May 2, 1918, page 1, column 5.
