Retired Famer Called By Death. J. A. Juhl, Well Known Citizen.
J. A. Juhl, residing in Le Mars the past twelve years, an early settler in Plymouth county, died Friday in the Sacred Heart hospital after a brief illness. He underwent an operation a few days before his death to relieve an internal malady.
Johannes A. Juhl was born January 15, 1867, at Wilstroff, Denmark, and when a youth came to America and shortly afterward to Remsen vicinity. He farmed in Fredonia township for many years before retiring to Le Mars in 1928.
He was married at Remsen in 1896 to Maria Wanner and five children were born to them, Andrew Juhl of Le Mars, Mrs. B. A Nelson of Maurice, Mrs. E. Nunemaker of Sioux City, Alfred Juhl, Sioux City, Edward of Le Mars.
Mrs. Juhl died in 1907 and Mr. Juhl married Leontine Dalsgaar in 1909, who survives him. One son, Arthur, was born of the second marriage.
The funeral was held Monday afternoon at St. John’s Lutheran church, Rev. L. L. Belk officiating, and interment was made in the city cemetery at Remsen.
The Mauer funeral home was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Juhl was a successful farmer and a good citizen who enjoyed the respect of the community. - Le Mars Semi-Weekly Sentinel, Tuesday, September 3, 1940

Funeral services were held on Monday afternoon at two o’clock from St. John’s Lutheran church with Rev. L. L. Belk officiating for Johannes A. Juhl, 308 1st Ave. N. E. , who passed away Thursday at Sacred Heart hospital. Burial was made in the Remsen cemetery under the direction of Mauer’s funeral home.
Johannes Juhl, the son of Andrew and Marie Juhl (nee Kasland [Kaalund]) was born January 15, 1867, in Denmark. He came to this country as a young man and took up farming in this community. He had reached the age of 73 years, 7 months and 15 days at the time of his death. – Le Mars Globe Post, Sept. 2, 1940, page 1.
