Death came suddenly and unexpectedly Tuesday morning, May 4, to Mrs. Asmus Steffen, one of the oldest residents of Remsen, who passed away as the result of a sudden attack of heart failure. Mrs. Steffen was 66 years of age. She is survived by her husband, eight children, two brothers and two sisters. The funeral was held Friday afternoon, with services at the home and at Christ church, conducted by Rev. Fred Wahlers. Mrs. Asmus Steffen, nee Lena Rowether, was born in Parish Schoenheld, Holstein, Germany, March 13, 1854. At the age of 5 years she came to the United States with her parents, the family locating near Davenport, Ia., She remained at home during her younger days, and in 1872, at Vinton, Ia., she was married to Asmus Steffen. The couple then settled at Traer, Ia., where they lived for a number of years. – Le Mars Semi-Weekly Sentinel, May 11, 1920, page 4.
