MRS. JOSEPH HETTWER IS CALLED BY DEATH. Remsen Woman Dies in Kansas City Hospital Following Operation Wednesday.
Death took another well known woman from this community last Wednesday, when Mrs. Joseph Hettwer, a resident here for 17 years, passed away in a hospital in Kansas City, Mo., following an operation for internal cancer. She was 42 years old and is survived by her husband, two children and two sister. The funeral was held in Remsen last Saturday afternoon.
Mrs. Hettwer had been in failing health for a number of years, and a few months ago it was learned upon examination that an internal cancer had developed. Two weeks prior to her death she was taken the health resort at Excelsior Springs, Mo, where it was thought she would derived benefits, but he doctors there advised her removal to a Kansas City hospital at once, for an operation. The operation was performed last Tuesday and Mrs. Hettwer passed away the following day. Her husband was at her bedside when the end came. The same day the body was shipped to Le Mars, thence to the family home nine miles southeast of here.
The deceased was born on February 21, 1886, at Nerschau, Leipzig, Germany, and in her native village was united in marriage to Joseph Hettwer on April 7, 1907. Two daughters were born to this union and the family continued to remain in Germany for four years, coming to the United States in 1911. They came direct to Remsen, locating on a farm southeast of here and later they purchased a farm five miles west and four miles south of Remsen, which is still the family home.
Mrs. Hettwer was a lifelong member of the Lutheran church, and was a woman of strict Christian principles and character, who endeared herself to everyone with whom she came in contact. She had a host of warm friends in this vicinity and her early death is a source of sincere regret among her many acquaintances. She was a devoted wife and mother, and her presence will be sadly missed in the little family circle.
The body was brought to Le Mars Wednesday and was taken to the family home at once. The funeral was held Saturday, with the Rev. A. Noack, pastor of Christ Lutheran church, in charge. Services were held at the home at 1 o’clock, and were followed by church services in Remsen at 2 o’clock, and burial in the Remsen cemetery. A very large number of friends attended the last sad rites, and the church was filled to capacity during the services.
Surviving the deceased are, besides her sorrowing husband: Her daughters, Mrs. Homer Ritchie of Le Mars, and Miss Erna Hettwer, who is living at home. There are also two sisters, Mrs. Selam Ritter of near Neptune, and Mrs. Martha Guttner of Remsen. – Remsen Bell-Enterprise, August 30, 1928, page 1, column 5
