James A. Martin
James A. Martin, 74, of Akron, died Wednesday (Dec. 30, 1987) in a Des Moines hospital after a long illness.
Services were held Monday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic church in Akron. Rev. Timothy Schott officiated. Burial was in St. Joseph cemetery under direction of Schroeder funeral home, Akron. Graveside services were conducted by Hoschler American Legion Post 186 of Akron. Pallbearers were John Martin, Paul Martin, Mike Martin, Jack Conway, Lou Conway and Norbert Isert.
Mr. Martin was born Dec. 26, 1913, at Westfield, Iowa, to A. A. and Anna Ryan Martin. He graduated from Westfield Consolidated schools. He farmed with his brothers until 1941. He served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during World War II. He married Helen Madge in May 1953, in Omaha, Neb. He worked as manager of American District Telephone Company in Sioux City and Des Moines for 31 years, retiring to Akron in 1977. Mrs. Martin died in 1987. He was a 40-year member of the American Legion.
Survivors include a son, James of Des Moines; two brothers, John and Tom, both of Westfield; three sisters, Maryf Maloy of Manilla, Iowa, Marguerite Donnelly of Port Charlotte, Fla., and Catherine O'Conner of Crescent.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Helen.
