for Akron's oldest residentAmy Violet Agnes, 96, one of Akron's oldest residents, died suddenly at her home Sunday morning (Jan. 16, 1983).
Services held Wednesday for Akron's oldest resident Amy Violet Agnes, 96, one of Akron's oldest residents, died suddenly at her home Sunday morning (Jan. 16, 1983). Services were held Wednesday, Jan. 19 at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic church in Akron. Father Stanley Stone officiated. Burial was in the parish cemetery in Akron, under direction of the Schroeder funeral home. Casketbearers were Robert Voss, Robert Utesch, Blaine Ross, Art Claeys, Loren Nielsen, and Arden Banks.
Mrs. Agnes, the former Amy Violet Smith, was born April 26, 1886 in the Dakota Territory, to pioneer parents, Henry and Jessie Smith. She was the youngest of ten children. She attended the Mount Hope country school, and the Akron high school, graduating in 1903, She was the oldest graduate attending the 1975 and 1980 all-class reunions, and received recognition for this achievement. She taught school for one year in rural Akron. She married James A. Agnes, May 17, 1905 at Akron. The couple farmed near Akron for many years. She lived her entire life in the Akron community Amy was very active in church work, and had made over 6,000 rosaries for the Catholic missions. In 1964, she took drivers training, getting her driver's license and drove her car up to her 94th birthday. She was so happy when she could pick up her friends and take them for a ride, go to senior citizens to play cards and dance.
God granted her wish. She was born at home on the family homestead and Akron. Amy was never hospitalized at anytime during her entire life. She always said, "hard work and good eating was good for one."
Survivors include her daughter, Sibyl Campbell of Akron; a grandson, Marlin Campbell of Glendale, Ariz.; a granddaughter, Lorene Dekker of Ireton; five great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and nine brothers and sisters.
We wish to thank everyone for the acts of kindness shown, for cards, flowers, food, and memorials and expressing sympathy at the time of Amy Agnes death.
