Rites held for Harry Nelson long-time Akron businessman
Harry J. Nelson, 78, longtime operator of Nelson Hatchery, died Monday, June 4, 1974 at the Akron nursing home after a lengthy illness.
Services were held at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 6 at the United Methodist church with Rev. Ralph Burdette officiating. Burial was in the Riverside cemetery. Graveside services were conducted by Freedom Lodge 435 AF&AM of Akron and military graveside services were conducted by Hoschler American Legion post of Akron. Pallbearers were Milton Anderson, Stanley Anderson, Curtis Lewison, Jr., Russell Anderson, Cyril Larsen and Fred Claesson, Jr..
Mr. Nelson was born January 10, 1896 at Middletown, Conn. He worked in a bank In Detroit for several years before en entering the army during World War l in 1918. He began farming in the Akron area. In 1929 he began operating the Nelson Hatchery in Akron and ran it until retiring in 1971 and moving to the nursing home. He married Lois Knapp December 22, 1925 at Onawa. She died in 1973. Mr. Nelson was a member of Freedom Lodge and the Sioux City Consistory and a 50-year member of the American Legion. He served on the Akron school board for several years.
Survivors include a son, David, of Akron; a foster-son, Allen Vander Helm of Akron; two brothers, Ed of Westfield and Earnest of Falmouth, Mass.; three sisters, Mrs. Eber (Hed) Waterman of Kinsley, Mrs. Lester (Edith) Lee of Minneapolis and Mrs. Ruth Irwin of Los Angeles; and five grandchildren.
