Clarence L. Kock, 87, of Le Mars, passed away at his home on Thursday, August 4, 2011.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, August 8, 2011 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A. with Reverend Gary Landsness officiating. Interment with military honors provided by the Wasmer American Legion Post #241 of Le Mars will be at Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitations will be from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Sunday, August 7, 2011 at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars with a 4:00 p.m. Prayer Service Sunday afternoon at the funeral home. Visitations will continue Monday morning at the church from 9:30 a.m. until service time. Expressions of sympathy may be extended to the family through www.carlsenfuneralhome.com.

Clarence Leon Kock was born February 19, 1924 in Le Mars, Iowa, the son of Ulrich and Anna (Lubben) Kock. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Le Mars. Clarence was raised on a farm in Elgin Township, Plymouth County, Iowa, and attended Elgin #9 Country school.

Clarence worked on the family farm until 1942 when he went to work for his brother, Gerhard on his farm until 1945. On October 17, 1945, he was drafted into the United States Army Air Corps. He served his country for 18 months, stationed in Japan at Tachikawa Army airbase. He was honorably discharged on October 4, 1947 after attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. After returning from the service, Clarence worked several jobs in Le Mars.

He was united in marriage to Gladys Steinfadt on December 18, 1948 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Le Mars. In 1956, he started with the United States Postal Service. He worked in the Sioux City Post Office as a clerk until his retirement on January 3, 1985.

Clarence was a lifelong member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Le Mars. Through the years, he enjoyed bowling, golfing, and going to McDonald’s to visit with friends. He and Gladys enjoyed square dancing and were members of the “Country Cousins” square dancing club in Le Mars for many years. But most of all, he loved the times spent with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He will be greatly missed.

Survivors include his wife of over 62 years, Gladys of Le Mars; two daughters: Diane Widick (Bill) of Clear Lake, IA, and their children: Shane Grego (Kristen), and their children, Lauren and Brooke, Kaci Brim (Peter) and their children, Angelina, Lucas, and Grace, and Amber Schumacher (BJ) and their children, Payton and Jesse; and Connie De Koter (Dean) of Carlisle, IA, and their children: Trent De Koter (Tracy) and their children, Jordan, Logan, and Caden, and Kara De Koter and her daughter, Jaeda; a son in law: Dr James Powell of Sioux Falls, SD, and his children: Julie Hurt (Dale) and their children, Madeline and Danielle, Adam Powell (Wendy) and their children, Jake and Cali, Alyson Palladino (Darren), and Michael Powell (Ashley); two sisters: Marie Janssen of Willmar, MN and Margaret Pecks of Le Mars, IA; a sister in law: Ilse Nagel of Huntsville, AL; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Barbara (Kock) Powell; a great grandson, Ethan De Koter; his parents, Ulrich and Anna Kock; a sister: Irene Lee; 3 brothers: Gerhard, Harm, and John; his brothers in law: Bernard Pecks, William Janssen, George Lee, George Moritz, and Harold Steinfadt; his sisters in law: Katherine Kock, Nora Kock, and Joyce Moritz; his father and mother in law: Herman and Dora Steinfadt; and 2 nieces: Betty Fisher and Rosemary Johnson.
