FORMER REMSEN RESIDENT DIES. August Haack Succumbs in Cherokee Hospital at Age of 66.
Remsen Bell-Enterprise: Death claimed another old time Remsen farmer this week when August H. Haack, who had been a resident here for more than 26 years, passed away in a hospital in Cherokee, Monday morning at an early hour. He was 66 years old. Surviving are seven children, a brother and a sister. Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon and burial in the Remsen cemetery.
Mr. Haack in recent years made his home in Minneapolis, where he owned property. He returned to Remsen early in May of this year to make his home with his son, Claus H. Haack, northeast of Remsen, but at the time of it was seen that he was in poor health. His condition became alarming and after spending four weeks in his son’s home he was taken to a Cherokee hospital for treatment, but his condition was serious and he failed to rally. He died at 3:30 Monday, August 1.
August H. Aack was born at Marne, Holstein, Germany, February 17, 1866, and came to this country with his parents at the age of two years. The family settled on a farm in Benton county, Iowa, and lived there for 18 years, after which they moved to a farm in Sioux county, between Remsen and Alton. Three years after coming to Sioux county, in 1889, August was united in marriage to Anna Hagermann, and the couple went farming on their own resources northeast of Remsen, in Plymouth county. They lived on their farm here for 23 years and in 1912 moved to another farm near the town Inwood. Here Mrs. Haack died in 1915, but Mr. Haack continued to operate the farm for four more years after which he sold out and moved to St. Paul. He made his home in that city and Minneapolis for 17 years and returned to his old surroundings here three months ago when sickness overtook him.
The deceased was an esteemable man and made friends wherever he lived. He is mourned by a large family and hundreds of warm friends in his community. He was a loving husband and father and a helpful and dependable friend to all with whom he came in contact. His Christian character won him the highest esteem of the communities in which he lived and his passing is keenly regretted by all who knew him.
Surviving Mr. Haack are the following seven children, one son, Peter, having passed away in 1920; Claus and Julius of Remsen; Herman, Melvin, Iowa; Walter, Ashton; Mrs. Henry Sierk, Inwood, Iowa; Mrs. Peter Krueger, George, Iowa; and Edna Haack, Rock Rapids, Iowa. There are 13 grandchildren. He also is survived by one sister, Margaret Witt, both prominent Remsen residents.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon at the Claus H. Haack Jr. home, and were followed by services in the Christ Lutheran church. Services were conducted by the pastor, Rev. A. Noack, and were largely attended as a fitting mark of respect to the memory of a man who had lived in this community for many years and who was generally regarded as a substantial citizen and a good friend. – Le Mars Globe-Post, Aug. 8, 1932, pages 1 and 4.
