Surrounded by her loved ones, Betty Frederick, of Remsen, died on Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars, following a lengthy illness.
Betty Jane Schmidt was born Jan. 11, 1929, the daughter of Edwin and Agnes (Westlund) Schmidt in Scotland, S.D. She graduated from Scotland High School in 1947. She then attended Southern State Teachers College in Springfield, S.D., where she received her associates’ degree in 1948. Later in her life, she attended Westmar College in Le Mars. She received her bachelor’s degree in English in 1966, graduating magna cum laude, of which she was very proud.
She married Raymond Duane Frederick on Aug. 22, 1948, after graduating from Southern State Teachers College. Betty began her 40-year teaching career in a one-room school house in South Dakota. From there, she and Ray taught at several schools in South Dakota, Nebraska and Iowa. Betty taught for 32 years at the Remsen-Union Elementary schools. She retired in 1992.
During retirement, Betty enjoyed reading, and spending time with her children, grandchildren and the many friends she made during her years of teaching school. She was also a long-time member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Remsen.
Betty was survived by her son, Dennis, and his special friend, Kathi Bauler; daughter Kathleen Scharff, and her husband, Peter; son, Clinton, and his special friend, Sue Ricke; daughter Marlene Nelson, and her husband, Mark; son Edwin, and his special friend, Kelli Pottebaum, all of Remsen. She is also survived by her brother, Charles, and his wife, Ramona of Hartley; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray, on Feb. 9, 1986.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. from St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Remsen. Friends may call anytime after 5 p.m. Monday. There will be a prayer service at 7 p.m. all at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Remsen. Burial will be in the Remsen City Cemetery. The Fisch Funeral Home of Remsen is in charge of arrangements.
Betty’s nine grandchildren, Jesse and Shaun Frederick, Kerri and Christopher Nelson, Shanda and Angelica Scharff, and Emily, Adam, and Andy Frederick will be casketbearers.
Because of Betty’s love for reading, her family is requesting that memorials in her name should be made to the Remsen Public Library. – Le Mars Sentinel, Aug. 9, 2004, page 5.
