Kiewel, William 1887 - 1973

William Kiewel departed this life last Monday forenoon, February 12, 1973, at the Mapes Home in Hawarden, Iowa, following an illness of many months duration. He was 86 years of age.

William Edward Kiewel was born in Union County, Dakota Territory, January 19, 1887. He was baptized April 8,1887. When he was 15 years of age, he was confirmed in the German language in Peace Lutheran Church of Alcester, South Dakota, on March 23, 1902. He was united in marriage to Miss Alma Ruth Day at a wedding service in her parental home in Granite Falls, Minnesota on February 25, 1914. He lived and farmed in Minnesota, Iowa, South Dakota, Montana and Wyoming. In 1954 he retired and moved to Akron where he lived until a few months before his death.

In, South Dakota he was very active in Farmer's Union and was on the original board of the Farmer's Cooperative in Sioux Falls. In October, 1925, he with his wife became members of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Akron. He had been a member of this church during many years since that time. Mr. Kiewel was widely known and certainly well liked. Wherever he was, he was active and ready to do his part During many years he was actively interested in this church. With his wife he gave the baptismal font at Immanuel in memory of his son who died during World War II.

Among those who survive his departure are: his wife, Mrs. Alma Kiewel; his two daughters, Mrs. Kathryn Krambeck of Sioux Falls, S.D. and Mrs. Betty White of Portland, Oregon; his five sons, Edward of Akron, James of Belle Fourche, S.D., Roy of Salem, Oregon, Laurence of Alcester, S.D. and Robert of Belle Plaine, Minn.; his two sisters, Mrs. Anna Reemts of Sioux City and Mrs. Selma Streeter of Fontana, Calif.; 41 grandchildren,36 great-grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends. His son, Douglas was lost in World War II and died in 1942 and his daughter, Lajla Twedt of Portland, Oregon died in 1972.
