John Howes, who lived two miles north of Merrill died at his home on Friday morning after an illness of three days. His death was caused by strangulated hernia. Mr. Howes was an old settler here having lived here over thirty years. He was born in 1842 at St. Louis, Missouri. He lived there but a short time when he moved with his parents to Lewsliyre, Wis., where be lived until he was a young man. He then went out west where he was engaged in the mines in Colorado. He lived in nearly every one of the western states before coming back east. In l869 he came to this vicinity where he has resided during the remainder of his life. He had been here but a short time, when he was married to Miss Hoover, a member of one of the pioneer families of Plymouth county. Mr. and Mrs. Howes were married 28 years ago and have resided on the old farm that number of years. Two sons were born to them. One died in infancy. He leaves a wife and one son, two sisters two brothers and several other relatives to morn his loss. The funeral services were held in the M. E. church and conducted by Rev. Empey last 8unday afternoon at 2:45 He was laid to rest in the Merrill cemetery by the side of his son. He was well and favorably known throughout the county and a very large number attended the funeral of their old time neighbor and friend. The out of town relatives and friends at the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Howes, of Pipestone, Minn., Mrs. Kidd, of Akron, and Mrs. H. Bagbe, of Leeds. A number from Le Mars also attended the last rites.
