AKRON, Iowa -- Herman B. Renken, 96, of Akron passed away Thursday, March 2, 2006, at Sunset Manor in Irene, S.D.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church E.L.C.A. in Akron, with the Rev. Jean Morse officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today, with the family present after 6 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Carlsen Funeral Home-Schroeder Chapel in Akron.
Herman Bruno Renken was born Aug. 10, 1909, in Preston Township, rural Plymouth County, Iowa, the son of Garieth and Reaka (Oetken) Renken. He was baptized into the Christian faith and confirmed into the Christian faith on April 13, 1924.
He was united in married to Johanna Dirks in Dec. 18, 1934. She passed away Aug. 11, 1951. Later, he was united in marriage to Everdena Van Dyke on Oct. 8, 1953, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Akron. The couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary three years ago.
He farmed for many years, retiring in 1964. Shortly after, they moved to Akron. He worked at the local implement dealer in Akron for several years.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. He enjoyed fishing, the outdoors and doing yard work. He will be greatly missed by all.
Survivors include his wife of more than 52 years, Everdena of Akron; two sons and their wives, Wendell and Mary Renken of Longmont, Colo., and Donald and Linda Renken of Volin, S.D.; three grandchildren and their spouses, Lisa and Randy Eutsler of Longmont, Colo., Jeremy and Jami Renken of Tustin, Calif., and Chad and Stacey Renken of Irene, S.D.; five great-grandchildren, Mitchell, Jordan and Reiley Eutsler, all of Longmont, and Lainey and Ashton Renken of Irene; sisters-in-law, Alice and her husband, Richard Hansen of Casper, Wyo., Tillie Helgerson and Bertha Rhods, both of Rock Valley, Iowa, Cornelia DeVos of Sioux Center, Iowa, and Hilda Renken and Edith Renken, both of Le Mars, Iowa; brothers-in-law and their wives, Gerrit and Annette Van Dyke of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Walter and Roberta Dirks of Akron; and extended family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Johanna (Dirks) Renken; a son, Robert James Renken; three brothers, Garieth Renken and his wife, Etta, William Renken and Walter Renken; and a sister and her husband, Luella and Edward Hoppe.
Pallbearers will be Chad Renken, Jeremy Renken, Lisa Eutsler, Mitchell Eutsler, Carl Feller, Earl Oetken, Richard Oetken, William Renken Jr. and Jerry Renken.Sioux City Journal
