Johannes Mohr, a well known resident of Remsen, died on Thursday at his home in that city after a several months illness from cancer.
Mr. Mohr was a native of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, and lacked a few days of being fifty years of age at the time of his death.
In 1880 he came to America and settled in Scott county and in 1900 located at Granville where he conducted a general merchandise store for some time and then moved to a farm in Meadow township, this county, where he resided for a time, and then moved to Remsen to live. He is survived by a wife and one son, Gustave, two brothers and a sister, all residing in or near Remsen.
The funeral was held on Sunday at St. Paul’s church in Remsen and was largely attended. – Le Mars Semi-Weekly Sentinel, May 5, 1914, page 1.

GONE TO THEIR REWARD. Two Plymouth County Residents Pass Away Within the Past Week.

John Mohr, a resident of this vicinity for the past twelve years and of this town for three years, passed away at this home I the northwest part of Remsen last Thursday afternoon, April 30, at the age of sixty years, following a period of six months illness with cancer of the stomach. The first attack of the disease made itself felt last fall, and ever since then Mr. Mohr’s health declined. He was bedridden during the last three weeks of his life, during which time he suffered much.
John Mohr was born on the twenty-fourth day of May, 1854, at Schleswig, Holstein, Germany. During his young manhood he was employed in a hardware store owned by his uncle at Schleswig, but in 1869 he came to this country with another uncle, Christ Marcussen, his parents, brothers and sister followed in 1872. He went direct to Durand, Iowa, where he obtained employment in a grocery store. He worked there for a number of years and subsequent5ly acted in the same capacity in stores at Luzenre and at Holstein, Iowa. It was during his residence in Luzerne, in 1883 that he was married to Christina Rann. Upon leaving Holstein the family went to Charter Oak where Mr. Mohr entered into a partnership in the general mercantile business with Messrs. Arp and Bornholdt. He was there four years, then operated a store at Granville for two years, going from there to Paullina where he operated a hotel. Later he spent two years in the hotel business in Nebraska after which he moved to Belle Plaine, Iowa. In 1902 he came with his family to Remsen, located on what is known as the John Eiben place six miles north of here. After nine years of farm life the family came to Remsen in 1911 and have lived here ever since.
Mr. Mohr was a splendid type of a gentleman, and among the many friends he made during his life here and among the old settlers of eastern Iowa who are now living here, he was a generous favorite. Always meeting his friends openly and friendly, and dealing with honesty and fairness, John Mohr was able all his life to command the respect and receive the love that is due every good man. While his passing is profoundly regretted by a host of friends of the family, it is most deeply mourned by his widow and her only son, Gustave Mohr, who resides at home. Besides these mourners, there are two brothers, Herman of Le Mars, and Theodore of Remsen. His sister Margaret, makes her home with her brother Theodore.
The funeral was held last Sunday afternoon. After the customary ceremonies at the home conducted by Rev. J. E. Birkner, the funeral services were completed a St. Paul’s church, with interment in the Remsen cemetery. The high regard in which the deceased man was held during his life was testified to in the large number of people who attended the last sad rites. Relatives from a distance who attended the funeral and who spent the past week here are: Mr. and Mrs. Fred Magelsen of Holstein; Mr. and Mrs. Henry Magelsen, of Correctionville; Mr. and Mrs. Julius Haas, and Ferdinand Thompson, of Belle Plaine. – Remsen Bell Enterprise, May 7, 1914, page 1, column 5.
