The funeral of Math Hansen, a former Remsen man, who died last week at Windom, Minn., ws held in Remsen Tuesday afternoon, and the body was laid to rest in the Remsen cemetery. Mr. Hansen was 72 years old.
Math Hansen passed away in a hospital at Windom, last Thursday evening, Dec. 7, at 7 o’clock with a complication of maladies with which he suffered during the past year. His first serious ailment came suddenly last December, when he was stricken with paralysis while enroute to Minnesota to visit his relatives and ever since then Mr. Hansen had been obliged to remain there to receive care. Two months ago his ailments were aggravated by a fall in which he was severely injured, and since then he was confined to a hospital.
The deceased was born on May 18, 1850, in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany and at the age of 20 he came to the United States with one of his brothers. He settled first in Davenport where he remained but a short time, and then went to Keystone in Benton county, Iowa. In 1883 he was married in Keystone to Marie Loeck, also of that place and soon thereafter the couple came to Plymouth county, settling on a farm north of town. Mrs. Hansen died there in 1907, but her husband remained here to make his home with his children, who continued to operate the farm. After the children grew up and became able to manage things themselves, Mr. Hansen left Remsen, spending several years in travel, and finally settling in Seattle, Wash., where he married a second time his bride being Clara Robertson, also of that city, who passed away in May, 1922, at her home, while her husband was confined in Windom, Minn., following his first attack of paralysis.
Mr. Hansen is survived by six children, a brother and a sister. The children are: Mrs. John Witt, Will Hansen and Charles Hansen of Remsen; Frank and John Hansen, of Orefino, Idaho, and Mrs. Hans Bruggemann of Windom, Minn. Another one who mourns his departure is Mrs. Peter Bruggemann of Windom, an adopted niece. One brother, P.N. Hansen and one sister, Mrs. John Tonsfeldt, both of Remsen, also survive him. Three brothers preceded him in death. They were Chris, of Scotland S.D., Wilhelm of Remsen and Henry in Germany.
The deceased was a good Christian in every sense of the word, and a man with many admirable qualities which won friends for him wherever he went. He was widely known around Remsen, and counted his friends here (continued on page 8 – printing very light and difficult to read) by the ????, all of whom were ???? at his death. The ???? of the family sympathize deeply with the bereaved relatives.
The body of Mr. Hansen was brought to Remsen for burial, arriving here Saturday morning and was taken to the home of his brother, P.N. Hansen. The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon with services at the home at 1:30 o’clock and at St. Paul’s church at 2 o’clock. The services were conducted by Rev. A.H. ??? and were largely attended. The pall bearers were John Sanny, Henry Sanny, John Haack, Claus Haack, Peter Rann?? and Detlef Ericksen [Erichsen].
Relatives from a distance who attended the funeral were Frank Hansen, Orodino, Idaho; Mr. and Mrs. Hans Bruggemann and Mr. and Mrs. Peter Bruggemann, Windom, Minn.,; Mrs. Chris Hansen and son William of Scotland, S.D. and H.P. Tonsfeldt, Nic Molzen, Peter Mozen and Mrs. Peter Carlson, Le Mars. – Le Mars Globe-Post, Dec. 18, 1922, pages 9 and 8.
