Andrew Juhl, the oldest man in Fredonia township, and one of the oldest residents of the county, died Thursday afternoon, April 23rd, at the home of his son, John Juhl, living one mile north of Oyens. Mr. Juhl until a few weeks before his death was unusually vigorous for a man of his age, but about a month ago he contracted a cold from which he never fully recovered. His death was attributed to dropsy of the heart and old age.
Andrew Juhl was born in the village of Hygum, Denmark, March 9, 1827, and was more than eighty-seven years old at the time of his death.
He remained in his native country until 1873, when he came to America, locating in Clinton, Iowa, where he remained about two years. In the spring of 1876 he joined the great army of home seekers flocking westward and became one of the pioneers of Plymouth county. He first famed in Remsen township and later moved to Fredonia, which has been his home for more than thirty years.
Before coming to America he was married in 1852 to Christina Kaallund, with whom he made the journey to their new home and lived through the trials of pioneer days. In 1888 his wife died, and since that time Mr. Juhl made his home with his children.
Mr. and Mrs. Juhl had a family of seven children, five daughters and two sons, all of whom are living. They are: Mrs. M.P. Bogh, John and Joe Juhl, all of Fredonia township; Mrs. Barney Kramer, of Le Mars; Mrs. H.P. Matsen, of Hinton; Mrs. J. Mortensen, of Valparaiso, Neb., and Mrs. John Saathoff, of Sumner, Neb. All of his children, except Mrs. Saathoff were present at the funeral. Besides his children he leaves thirty-six grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren.
With the passing of Mr. Juhl Fredonia township lost one of its most venerable citizens. He was a man of keen intellect, and to the last was interested and well versed in the topics of the day. He was a devoted member of the Danish Lutheran church in Fredonia township and was honored by all its members as well as by the congregation of the Danish church at Marcus which sent a large delegation to the funeral.
Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the Fredonia township church and the body was laid beside that of Mrs. Juhl who died twenty-five years ago. Rev. Soe, of Marcus had charge. The pallbearers, all old friends and neighbors of the deceased, were: Magnus Schnepf, P.G. Wagner, H.P. Mortensen and J.P. Larson, of Fredonia township and Andrew Kloster and P.H.
