H. KROEGER DIES IN EUROPE. Remsen Man Passes Away Suddenly—Relatives Told in Cablegram. Remsen Bell-Enterprise: Otto Kroeger received the sad news this week of the death of his father, Henry Kroeger, who has been visiting at his old home in Germany for the past seven months. The news was received by cablegram, which reached Remsen Monday.
The son knows nothing regarding the nature of his father’s illness, but that his death came rather unexpectedly is shown by the fact that in his letters to relatives here Mr. Kroeger had not intimated that he was ill. The cablegram gave only the brief notice of this death in the two word, “Father Dead.”
Otto Kroeger immediately communicated with his relatives in Germany, ordering the body shipped to Remsen at once and expects it to arrive here within three weeks.
The deceased was 63 years and 11 months old, and a native of Holstein, Germany, where he was visiting at the time of his death, which occurred in the village of Utersen. Mr. Kroeger left this country last June in company with F. G. Meinert, who also went abroad to visit his old home. He had recently informed his relatives here by letter that he expected to be back in Remsen about Feb. 22. – Le Mars Globe-Post, Feb 19, 1923, page 13. Remsen Bell-Enterprise: The last sad religious rites over the body of Henry Kroeger, esteemed Remsen citizen who died in Germany several weeks ago, were held Wednesday afternoon at Christ Lutheran church, Rev. A. Noack having charge, and the funeral was attended by a large number of friends of the deceased who joined the relatives in mourning over the death of a staunch friend and highly respected resident.
The body of Mr. Kroeger arrived here Monday evening and was taken to the Moeller undertaking parlors to await the hour of burial. The funeral service took place yesterday at 2 o’clock and burial was made in the Remsen cemetery.
Henry Kroeger was 63 years 10 months and 24 days old at the time of his death. He was born March 18, 1859 in Kreis Pinnerborg, Holstein, Germany, and came to the United States at the age of 27 years, first settling near Fonda, Iowa, where he spent one year working on a farm. He then came to Remsen where a number of his friends from the old country were already located, and decided to make his home here permanently. In 1888 he was united in marriage to Catherine Krohn, also a native of Germany, who then had just arrived here, and the couple settled on a farm southeast of Remsen, where they resided up to the time of their retirement in 1915. Mrs. Kroeger passed away in May 1922.
The deceased is survived by one son Otto, and one brother, Claus Kroeger, both of Remsen, the former occupying the home farm southeast of town. He is also survived by four sisters, all living in Germany. – Le Mars Globe-Post, March 26, 1923, page 9.
