DEATH OF MRS. SPIECKER. Well Known Remsen Resident is Suddenly Called.
Mrs. Amalia Spiecker, a well known resident of Remsen, died very suddenly at her home on Sunday night. Mrs. Spiecker was in her apparently usual health on Sunday. She received word that day of the death of an old friend and former neighbor, Claus Horn, at Larchwood, and was planning with her family to attend the funeral. The news of her old friend’s death was somewhat of a shock to Mrs. Spiecker as she was of a nervous disposition but in the evening she was her usual self and a number of friends came in to spend the evening. The company left early and Mrs. Spiecker had retired to her room when her sons, Ferdinand and Henry, heard her scream. They hastened to her room and found her suffering from a terrible pain in her head. She was conscious and said she felt that death was near and very shortly afterwards died, medical aid proving of no avail.
Amalia Detlefs was born near Hamburg, Germany, on November 30, 1841, and came with her parents to America and settled at Davenport in 1967. She was united in marriage with Hans Spiecker in July 1869, and they went to Benton county, where they lived until 1883, when they moved to Plymouth county and lived on a farm west of Remsen, later moving into town.
Mrs. Spiecker leaves a large number of children to mourn her death. They are: Mrs. Anna McLean, of Sioux City, Frank, Theodore, Mrs. Mary Oehlerts, Henry, Ferdinand, Mrs. Kate Dornbusch, all of Remsen. She also leaves twelve grandchildren and a brother, Hans Detleff, of Santa Cruz, Cal.
The funeral services were held on Tuesday at Christ Lutheran church in Remsen, Rev. J.P. Guenther officiating, and were very largely attended. Mrs. Spiecker enjoyed a large acquaintance in the community and was highly respected and esteemed by all who knew her. - Le Mars Sentinel, Friday, May 7, 1915, page 10.
