H.J. Boge, one of Remsen’s best known citizens, died at the home of his brother, C.H. Boge, in Remsen, early Monday morning of heart failure. His end came suddenly, with only slight warning. He was 62 years old.
Mr. Boge had been known to be a sufferer with heart trouble for a number of years, but due to his habit of exercising the utmost caution and his strict mode of living his ailment caused him the minimum of trouble and he was never confined to the sick room. He was up and about daily and when occasion demanded he was actively in charge of his business as an auto livery operator. He was about town last Saturday, only two days before his death, but on Sunday he suffered with a severe cold and a physician was summoned. A sudden heart attack ended his life at 8 o’clock Monday morning.
Hans Jacob Boge, familiarly known as “Jake” among his many local acquaintances, was born in Hanover, Germany, on Oct 22, 1964, and came to the United States in company with his parents at the age of 3 years. The family settled on a farm in Benton county, Iowa, and there Jake lived with his parents until he reached young manhood. On Aug. 28, 1889, he was united in marriage to Miss Lena Feuerbach, at the latter’s home in Vinton, Iowa, and the couple operated a farm in that vicinity for a period of three years. Then they came to Plymouth county, settling on a farm south of Remsen, and Remsen was Br. Boge’s home for the rest of his life. They retired and came to town after a few years and Mrs. Boge passed away in 1906. Since then Mr. Boge has made his home with relatives in Remsen, spending the past few years in the home of his brother, C. Herman Boge.
The deceased is survived by one brother, C.H. Boge of Remsen, and two sisters, Mrs. Anna Groth of Sibley and Mrs. John Theissen of Keystone, Iowa. The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon with services at the home at 3 o’clock, conducted by Rev. Geo Gilbert, pastor of the M.E. church at Aurelia, Iowa. A large crowd followed the body to its last resting place and joined the relatives in their sorrow of the passing of a good man. The pall bearers were: John Sanny, Herman Nordmann, G. W. Kramer, John Ahmann, Ambrose Jermann and Charles Lahrsen. – Le Mars Globe-Post, Feb. 1, 1926, page 4.
